BASI
Provide courses to make you a qualified snowsport instructor.
The BASI Ski and Snowboard GAP Year Courses have been designed as a dynamic Fast-Track route to becoming a qualified Snowsport Instructor. Open to all applicants over 17 (18 in USA), the 10-week programme is not only for students taking a year out between school & university, but also for anyone wanting time out from a career, a career change, or simply the quickest route to gaining an instructor qualification. Of course, the programme will also improve your personal technical performance.
The step from being a competent skier or snowboarder to a qualified instructor is a big one but, with the aid of top-class coaching from BASI Trainers and qualified ski school instructors, your skills will be developed and improved in an enjoyable, well-tested and well-organised method to help you fulfil your potential.
A BASI GAP Year Course provides a fast track opportunity to:
1) launch a snowsport career in one season
2) take a break from your current job
3) spend a great GAP year before going on to further education
4) make a career change at short notice
BASI GAP courses include an initial pre-selection, usually in the spring or summer before your course. Once you move to resort the programme includes:
Week 1 - Personal Performance Skiing/Boarding Course
A 5-day course led by a BASI Trainer, designed to prepare the student for the following week's Trainee Instructor Course. It includes coaching on high-speed, bumps, freeride, racing, steep slopes and off-piste.
Week 2 - BASI Trainee Instructor Course
This is a 5-day course, the first level of BASI qualification, also led by a BASI Trainer and covering skiing/boarding safely; planning, conducting & evaluating an instructing session; accident & emergency handling; understanding of how to improve personal & instructing performance; evaluation of strengths and weaknesses to date.
Weeks 3 to 8 - Ski School Experience
During this period you'll shadow qualified instructors for up to 12 hours each week as they teach; the student also receives 6 hours of personal-performance clinics to hone technical ability.
Weeks 9 & 10 - BASI Instructor Training Course
A 10-day continual-assessment course, led by a BASI Trainer. Successful students will be able to ski/board to the required competent level; have the knowledge, ability and understanding to safely teach alpine skiing/snowboarding on a marked, ski-patrolled area to the required level. Child Protection Module.
At the end of this week students will normally travel together back to UK, although some students elect to stay on in resort and travel home at their own expense.
This type of course is great fun, yet is intense. Whilst attending the GAP course you are based for 100% of the time in a snowsport environment. The intention is for all students to be immersed in the culture and way of life of a snowsport instructor and to be totally focused on the outcome.
Previous GAP students have found that training in such an environment, and living and 'working' with fellow students creates a unique atmosphere and develops the focus and motivation required of this course. It's also recognised that, 10 weeks spent in the unique approach and professional environment of a BASI GAP course, helps to develop personal confidence, independence and individuality.
