Train Travel in New Zealand New Zealand has a fine rail network, although it is not very extensive. Train routes are mainly limited to travel between the main cities and more provincial towns. Choosing to travel by rail, however, is a great idea for those wanting to experience the fantastic scenic routes that New Zealand has to offer. The trains themselves tend to be comfortable, most offering one class and providing passengers with a brilliant viewing decks and panoramic windows. Tranz Scenic is New Zealand’s passenger rail company. They offer a 20% student discount on their South Island services, the TranzCoastal (Picton to Christchurch) and TranzAlpine ( Christchurch to Greymouth) services. Simply whip out your valid student card and save! For travel on the North Island they provide a weekday Capital Connect service between Palmerston North and Wellington. Also, their Overlander Service allows you to see the best of the North Island as you travel between Wellington and Auckland. If you want to cross between the islands, try a ThroughFare as the price includes both train and ferry services. The Scenic Rail Pass allows travellers to enjoy the entire Tranz Scenic rail network. For more information once you’re in New Zealand, visit Auckland and Wellington train stations, i-site tourist information centres and travel agents.
